How T.N. is gearing up to bid plastic adieu

Come January 2019 and Tamil Nadu will begin its journey to going plastic-free. The State government proposes to ban disposable plastic items in the New Year. The ban will primarily apply to plastic carrybags, plates, cups, flags, sachets used in packaging water, among other items. Exceptions will be made for disposable plastic used for packaging milk, curd, oil and medical items. As awareness about the proposed ban spreads, with under six months to go, various sectors in the state have begun to come up with solutions. The government as well as some organisations are looking at creative alternatives to plastic, and at better ways to use or recycle plastic. Whether all these diverse strands coalesce into a serious movement remains to be seen. But even as residents say no to plastic bags, and carry their own cloth or jute bags, it is important that every individual to be aware of the harmful effects of plastic and help find alternatives. A list of small and big initiatives, by no means exhaustive, that are afoot in Tamil Nadu, months ahead of the deadline.
